Eye into Roulette Wheel

We got inspiration for our cross cut from George's eye to the roulette wheel from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Hitchcock zooms into the blood flowing down the drain and then cross cutting into Marion's lifeless eye. I think this is a good technique to use because it shows that we have taken inspiration and using techniques to show our skills.

Harvey's Evaluation Plan

Evaluation Question Proposals

Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
To answer this question, our group will be completing a director’s commentary of the film together. We will discuss how our film uses the codes and conventions of traditional thriller films including:
·         Crime
·         Mystery
·         Murder
Question 2: How does your media product present particular social groups?
For this question, I intend on creating a poster style document  in which I will explain how our film presents a particular social group, in our case, two assassins and a casino owner. I will talk about how their clothing shows their character as well as their actions throughout the opening to the film. I will also attempt to mention mise-en-scene as well as the costumes.
Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
For this question I will create a PowerPoint presentation of around five or so slides in which I will discuss the different types of institutions within media i.e Conglomerates, independents etc. I will also talk about their characteristics and which of the two would be more likely to pick up our film to distribute it.
Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?
To answer this question I want to create a leaflet design from publisher and fill it with information about our target audience but also explain how our group came to the conclusion that that particular group was our target.
Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?
I plan to answer this question I plan to write a publisher article on various ways we could attract our target audience and how we could then address that same audience internally or externally from our film.
Question 6: What have you learnt about technologies from`the process of constructing this product?
For this question I intend on creating a PowerPoint presentation explaining what I have learnt about the technological aspects of creating a short film.  I aiming that this will be around 5-10 slides long and explain clearly the technological knowledge I have earned during the media course. These will include:
·         Editing
·         Camerawork
Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

For this question I will be focusing on the new and existing practical skills that I have improved since my preliminary task. I will make comparisons between my thriller film and the preliminary task film we made at the beginning of the year. I will comment on how I have improved my work and my knowledge of how to create a short film.

Tick Tock

Our deadline for everything is nearly here and we are all pulling together to get our work done on time. Chop chop gang!!!

George's Evaluation Plan

Evaluation Questions

Question 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I plan to do some form of a talk show with the rest of my group; we will film this talk show and prepare notes and questions for each other that are related to the question.
Our film uses a few products that develop the conventions of real media conventions. We used a camera, tripod and editing software (Corel VideoStudio Pro X3). Using this software we were able to edit the shots that we recorded on our camera using our tripod to aid the steadiness of camera on most shots. By using the editing system we could add the transitions that we needed such as the Blend for the shot of the Eye which transitions to the shot of the Roulette Table.

What code and conventions did our film use?
  • ·         A killing
  • ·         A chase
  • ·         Low key lighting
  • ·         Fast Paced editing
  • ·         Face pace music
  • ·         Close ups on characters facial expressions

Question 2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
I plan on answering this question on a prezi by presenting the different social groups in our film. The groups that were represented are business men and gangsters. Business men can be represented in two of the characters my character (the mafia leader) and Ellis (the guy getting hunted). And the gangster is represented by Harvey (an assassin).  Ellis is on the run and being hunted by his bosses assassin. We have taken some cliché moments from other thriller action films such as:
  • ·         Guy being hunted
  • ·         Evil Boss

Question 3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I plan on answering this question on a power point to show that we didn’t have a budget so we had to look at independent companies in their field, not owned or partnered with any logistics companies.  I am looking at independent companies such as:
  • ·         Peccadillo Pictures Ltd
  • ·         Launching Films Inc.

Question 4. Who would be an audience for your media product?
I plan on answering this question as a leaflet. So I can use the poster as advertisement as well showing that our film is a 15. I’ll answer these questions in the leaflet:
·         What makes our film a 15?
·         Why is the target audience for 15 year olds and above?
·         What relations does it have to other thriller films?

Question 5. How did you attract/ address your audience?
I will answer this question using animation software.
I can bring in pictures of our questionnaire that we did at the start of the course to find a target audience. I can refer to question 1 and also mention the code and conventions. We also can show the audience the most popular answers and show what we could be making. I will be answering these questions during the animation as well:
·         What did the audience expect?
·         Did we include the answers of the questionnaire in our film?
·         What code and conventions did we relate to?

Question 6. What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I will answer this question as a podcast  and I will list all of the technologies that we used on the course.
I will start with ‘In pre-production, production and post-production we used a lot of technologies using software and hardware’. I will also explain the different skills that I have learnt throughout the course as well. Making some points such as:
·         What went well during the course and what went bad during the course?
·         How could I improve the final edit of the film?

Question 7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full project?
I plan on answering this question as a film, this way I can prepare handouts I can show the camera of past experience in filming and explain that I have some work experience in media such as filming some shots but also show the areas that I haven’t used such as editing. I will also show how I adapted to this course (because I didn’t do GCSE) and show the issues that I faced on this course as well.
What did I learn from the preliminary task at the start of the year?
·         Plan the production beforehand.
·         Look at areas of improvement such as editing problems, shots too long or short etc.

·         How to focus on and keep your target audience attracted to the film.

Feedback from Chillers

CH CH CH CH Changes

After gaining feedback, we have been advised to make some changes to our film, in order to improve it.

1. We need to make changes to our title sequence by adding some different music for the institutions. We need to find a different font. As well as take a second look at or title sequence to make sure everything is concluded in it.

2. We need to have a look at the panorama shot of the river. Chillers thought it was a bit jumpy, we will need to evaluate possible solutions.

3. We need to revise the different cuts of our scenes. Specifically the stair scene, the barrel scene and George's scene where he is shot.

4. We need to look at super imposing the roulette wheel on the eye.

5. Finally, we need to take a look at the final  music choices, perhaps we could change the pace for certain scenes.

Changes to the Script and Storyboard

Because our brief is to make the opening two minutes of a thriller film, we had to make some adjustments to our script and storyboard. Our script turned out to become roughly seven minutes long so our quality assure, Matt, have to make some major improvements to make our film fit the brief.

We completely erased several scenes from it like scene 2 (in the office), scene 3 (the picture scene) and scene 4 (romance scene). We now have little dialogue in our script. Our opening scene now consists of a two characters running, inferring that one is chasing the other, until the main character 'The Boy' comes to some sort of a deserted setting where he finds a gun in a briefcase. Then both 'The Boy' and the 'Assassin', the other character who was apparently chasing 'The Boy', are seen in a room together another character is in the room also, but we do not know who it is for his name is never mentioned.

Other People's Blogs

To get an idea as to what other people on blogger post for their blogs, I researched other blogs by going onto our own blog and clicking the “Next Blog” tab at the top of the page, which sent me to another person’s random blog page.

The randomness of this process was positive because it allowed me to research several different types of blogs rather than purely blogs in the media genre. The first thing I noticed is that other blogs contained more YouTube video links which we could use more of, for failed takes for example.

The next aspect of the other blogs I noticed was that most of them contained background images or graphics, which I thought added a professional touch to the blogs and made them, look better, generally, than blogs that didn’t contain any. Bolder and more vibrant colour schemes also made the blogs more eye catching and intriguing for a audience. I think we should use some brighter colours in our blog in order to make people notice it more.

Costume List New

These are the recommended clothing and make up to be worn by our characters, for our film.

Mains

Boy

·       White Shirt, Black Tie, Black Trousers and Black Shoes. To look like he’s in some form of business.

·       No makeup. This character is supposed to look professional and to look like he’s been running for a long time. If he wears make up then he’ll look unprofessional.

·       Black Casual coat as over-wear, he needs to wear this for two reasons. The first reason is that he is by a river so we need to make him look realistic, and the other reason is that the coat is supposed to create an eerie feel to him.

Assassin

·       Black non-casual coat with a hood that can cover the actors’ face. We want to have a silhouette of this character, so we don’t want to show the characters’ face at all so therefore we will need to have a hood so we can have the actors’ full body in short.

·       Makeup is not needed because we don’t want to show the characters’ face.

·       As an addition to the black coat, the assassin will need to wear black trousers and black shoes so he can create a creepy sort of feel to our audience.

Extras

Homeless Person

·       This character will need wear a thick, brown coat and needs to look either ripped or untidy in some way. So then it looks like he’s been out on the streets for a long time.

·       He needs to also have black trousers and black shoes to look like he’s a fired businessman.

·       Makeup is not a needed for this character because he is supposed to look like he has been out on the streets for a long time.

Businessman

·       This character is to wear business clothes such as a suit/ jacket with a tie (bow is optional), with black trousers and black smart shoes.

·       Makeup is optional for this character because we need to make him look like he has just come out of a meeting. We could use something to make him look lighter but as I said it’s optional.

Potential Music for our Film

Potential Music

I used the website http://www.royaltyfreemusic.com/ and reviewed most of the music that would be suitable and I have come up with some suggestions for each scene in our film.

The Running Scene

The first song that I thought that we could use is titled ‘Precious Time’ by Prime Time Drama. The tempo is suitable for the running scene because we can use the drum beat to our advantage by switching from black-screen to the footage every drum beat we could do this for about 20 seconds into the film then we could have, when the strings come in, we could have the footage playing normally. http://www.royaltyfreemusic.com-PreciousTime

The second song that I thought would good to have in our running scene in is titled ‘On the Run’ also by Prime Time Drama. The tempo is slightly slower however it still works for the film because it makes the film feel scarier, I believe that this song will be good for the Assassin appearances because he is a slow character whereas The Boy is a fast character, the Assassin always walks.

The Briefcase Scene

The first song that I thought would be good for this scene is titled ‘Call to Arms 1’ by Inspirational Images. We can only use the start of this (first 20 seconds) because the song gets more uplifting from that point on so therefore we should edit the music so that first 20 seconds repeat for the duration of the song. http://www.royaltyfreemusic.com-CalltoArms1

The second song that thought would be suitable for this scene is titled ‘Against the Odds full’ by Spy Movies. We can use all of this song for the duration of this scene because it stays quite low and creepy; the piano in this song creates a slow mood for the audience and we can put a gunshot at the end to create our cliff-hanger of the film. http://www.royaltyfreemusic.com-AgainsttheOddsfull

Copyright

Copyright is the exclusive legal right, given to a creator, to copy, distribute, publish, perform or record material of an artistic, literary or musical nature. Copyright is often used by content creators to give them and only them the right to use it, meaning only they can receive credit for it.

Copyrighting is something our group had to be aware of during our production process as we had to ensure we didn’t incur any legal situations with content creators online. Specifically, we used images of movie titles, cover etc. from the internet and therefor had to be extremely careful not to use any material which had legal protection.

To do this we checked the sources of all our images’ sources to ensure the creator had no copyright over the image and in turn, no obligation to request permission to use them on our blog and avoid any legality issues. If we had faced this problem, however, we would have researched and found the source of the image and contacted them about using their image for our blog post. Same would've been applied to any music we wanted to use.
